Is your merc ... ?

Is your merc Bobba Fett, Arnie in Predator, or Bishop from the X-Men? How do you see him/her in your minds eye? I was thinkin' if there was a clear picture of a merc then we could dream up new remort skills to suit.

Personally, I would really like to see the mercenary class take more of a "soldier" aspect then a class that has the things thief doesnt. (hp, knockdown) It'd be really cool if mercs took more of a "bobba fett" approach to fighting, Using primarily guns and bombs to accomplish what needs to be done. I must say, after using crossface, it has got to be one of the coolest skills in the game in my opinion, it can knockdown, stun, and un-equip face eq so it's pretty cool, i've already posted my ideas for remort skills that could be gun oriented so, yea.

One of the problems I see with Mercenary is that it is such a braod term.

Definition, courtesy of Dictionary.com:

mer·ce·nar·y adj. 1. Motivated solely by a desire for monetary or material gain. 2. Hired for service in a foreign army.

This is ALL of the information the name gives us. And boy is that broad.

The first definition could be just about anyone. Lysolchip would be considered a mercenary by that definition.

The second definition is a bit better. Someone hired for service by a foreign army. Of course, what "service" is could be broad. I could see anything from unit-type foot soldier people to special covert ops like in Splinter Cell or Metal Gear.

I guess what I'm trying to get at, in a roundabout way, is that maybe just calling them "Mercenaries" is too broad to really get anything good out of it. As it is, Tempus Mercenaries really are a combination of Covert Ops, Frontline Fighters, Specialist Fighters, and Gun Bunnies. Maybe if there was to be something more specific then it would be easier to come up with working ideas for them.

What would be a solution to this? Maybe we need a better definition of what a Mercenary is on Tempus. Here's the current definition in the help files:

"Mercenaries are futuristic rebels, with no particular cause, but just to kick some major ass. They are able to utilize a lot of weaponry as well as some butt-kicking skills to get what they want."

Once again, not a whole lot of direction. So basically, what I think needs to be done is just the creation of an artistic vision for Mercenaries, and then skills could be sahped to that.

Oh yeah, and to answer the question - if I had a Merc, it would be somewhere between Sam Fischer from Splinter Cell and Dante from Devil May Cry.

When i think of a Merc. i think of mostly the loner image, someone that is just always on his way to better things, just passing threw if you will. Other than that it ranges from a Conan type Character, yes he was a barbarian but he was a mercenary too (read the books), all the way to Just a Trench Coat wearing warrior… unaffected by the changes in the world around him, still doing it the way its always been done… like a merc. is from the Future, i don't believe they should have many Futuristic Skills … i know others will disagree … so here's my thought (and just a though mind you) MAYBE… when you choose to be a Merc. you should have to Select a Direction, which will select the type skills you can learn… thats a loose idea tho.

Remort Skills…. Well Thats a tough one. ::Brainstorming:: …. I GOT IT… this'll blow you away lol not really. A skill that helps you keep a "cool head" … Increases the chance for Critical Hits, and Lower the chance that you'll Miss a target, and decrease the chances of being hit… or Fail at fleeing. Because the MAIN thing that people think of when they think of a Merc. is A Cool Headed …Cold … never over excited.. you know a Bad ass… James Dean with a Gun. What you guys think.
