Past and Future mixing
Kitano Posted 19 Aug 2005

So, I've been reading around about the Tempus story and such, and the main theme seems to be the crossing over of the past and future. So why then, players aside, are there no future people in the past (and vice versa)? I admit, I haven't explored the entire mud, but as far as I can tell, past zones have past mobs and future zones have future mobs. Now, I'm not saying that the zones should mix completely, but you'd think there would be some sort of crossover. I really think it would be fun.

For example, we've got a group of careless physics who timewarped into the middle of a barbarian colony and got beaten down and forced into slavery. This could lead to some interesting eq, such as a latticed nuclear plasma club (or something less stupid).

Another interesting idea would be to have perhaps Past class variants in the future. What if a group of devout Clerics and Knights stumbled through a time rift and ended up in a robotic city. What if they began to worship a gigantic cyborg instead. Whoa, we could have neutral aligned Knights and Clerics in the future who worship a new god: Turing. Deep Thought. Cray. Wozniak. Gates. Torvalds. Kind of like a cross between knights/clerics and borgs. Oh the possibilities!

Anyways, my crazy ideas aside, I think it would be nice if some of the time blurs were incorporated into our zones. I think it could lead to a lot of unique features to our MUD and make it a lot more interesting.

I agree. I'd love to see the theme and history incorporated or write something that makes it more intertwined. That said, I believe the builders and archs are making a step toward that, specifically with Wish's work on updating help files, redefining deities, revamping the future, and overall thematic and newbie work. Does everybody else think the past and future would mix? I do remember reading the storyline, and I believe it says that there have been strange occurences, such as rifts in time and portals to the future, but I've never seen anything support that, other than intertemporal transportation (like the rift in ECU and in the Sewers of Modrian).

Great topic Kitano. Merriam is correct, so don't be surprised if you see more past/future intermixing down the line. Here is the last paragraph of the background story accessible through your account page:

These figures inevitably meet, and begin to engineer the nature of reality to their own ends. The general populations all across the timeline begin to notice subtle changes and strange visitors bearing unknown magicks. As the flow of time begins to swirl together, you enter Tempus…

These "strange visitors" are you, the players. It is not uncommon to see a Cyborg chilling in HS, or a Ranger/Knight exploring the corporate prison, Dracharnos. Most players wear both future and past equipment, not to mention items gathered from the Outer and Inner planes.

While there are mobs that have crossed time (Keep looking, you'll find them), the rifts in time are still a fairly new occurance, according to each timeline and the mobs of the game, and hardly anyone knows about them. You don't see many mobs queued up by a rift to explore the past, because they don't know about the time rifts yet. Not to say that this won't change as the Mud develops.

However, there are numerous zones ideas that deal more specifically with time travel that will be considered. There is also a lot that needs to be done to round out the current planes, bringing them up to new standards.

We will continue to develop the planes of existence, and keep your note on greater time travel adventures in our minds.

God, this sounds like a brochure.

xoxo.
