New races...this would be awesome!
Panzer Posted 9 Feb 2004

As I was discussing in my other post about remorting, I'd like to expand a little bit on the idea of adding new races.

What do you think?

Some ideas:

Sea Elf (water breath as innate ability) Wild Elf (higher Con, less Int/Wis)

Lizardman (normal human but with a higher Con and natural claw attack instead of hitting)

Thri'kreen (insectoid, four-armed humanoid praying mantises) less strength, excellent Int, good Dex, and a natural claw attack and natural AC bonus of like -25 or something like that because of hard shell.

Titan (remort only race, able to be chosen if we implement the "pick new race upon remort" idea): tremendous strength, Dex max of 18 (or less), excellent Con, High Int/Wis. Size would be HUGE and HEAVY.

Half Giant (much like a Minotaur..perhaps with less Dex, but a higher Str). And, maybe, even offshoots of them…Fire Giant (innate prot. fire), Stone Giant (auto 10% dam raduction due to dense skin), Frost Giant (innate prot. Cold), Storm Giant (innate prot. electricity).

These offshoots could be limited to remorts only..perhaps.

Half Troll (or even "Trollish"). High Str, fair Dex, low Int & Wis, insane Con (or, just a high con but with an innate ability to regenerate higher HP's per tick..or on a constant basis, if possible). They would also have an innate claw attack, rather than hitting.

These are just a few ideas…thoughts?

Though new races would be a fun addition to the game, there are already a lot of races that aren't really being played. Though I don't have any awesome empirical data to back up my claim, but I'd be willing to bet that there are a lot fewer dwarves, halflings, humans, and minotaur than there are half-orcs, drow, and elves.

From what I understand (and this may not be right), these last three races have some pretty cool benefits that the other races don't get. Half-orcs get their extra movement, drow get some nifty magic bonuses, and elves throw down better enchants.

In order to make these classes a little bit more played, I propose we offer skill cost decreases depending on race. This could be done one of two ways: by giving each race a set of preferred classes or by giving each race a list of skills that they are just better at. When they go to practice one of those skills, the cost would be discounted.

For example:

Take the race halfling. Their preferred class list could possibly go (in order from best to worst): Thief, Cleric, Ranger, Psionic, Monk, Physic, Cyborg, Mercenary, Mage, Barbarian. Essentially, if a halfling character were a thief, and he went to go practice his thief skills, he'd get a discount for buying them. If he remorted mage, his mage spells might be more expensive than they would normally be, or at the very least just stay the same.

What do you think?

Very interesting…

I knew that Orcs and Half-orcs got 2x move gain.

I didn't know that about the elves…and in fact, it's not in the help file or info when you go through the character creation process.

Perhaps, if we don't want to consider new races, looking at the races that people don't play and try to improve upon them so that people DO play them more.

:)

Oh, I do think you might be onto someting there Storm…

Maybe even take it a step further and develop some race-only skills.

I can think of one already: Gore

As a Minotaur, you can develop a "gore" attack, where you try to impale your opponent on your horns.

Maybe even add a special "eq slot" for minotaurs to add stuff to their horns…(special tips, etc).

Maybe all Halflings get an automatic -20 to ac for being so small.

And Dwarves get -10 for being smaller too. And maybe dwarves get a reduced cost for specialization if they specialize in any kind of Axe or hammer…

Well, to some extent something similar to racial skills is already in place. For instance, elves get archery and tabaxi get claw and bite. Perhaps if there was a way for those skills to improve with level similar to read scrolls, it would make them useful. As it stands, you get them at a low ability level.

Interesting that none of those racial benefits are discussed anywhere in the help files that I can find…shrug
