Observations about the new character creation process
Merriam Posted 18 Jul 2005
  1. It says you can press return at any time to cancel the character creation process, but then asks for a name. Presumably, you would press enter to enter the name. But it says it would cancel character creation. This could be confusing.

  2. While creating a character, it says you can type 'help class' to see what they can do, but then it says type skills list monk or spells list mage or whatever to see more, but it's impossible to do so at the character creation menu.

  3. Alignment is not described. It simply says, "Hey man, what alignment do you want to be? Good, neutral, or evil?" It should provide a better explanation.

  4. Attributes are not explained when rolling for stats, nor does it mention the most important attributes for the class you have just chosen.

  5. TEDII says to terminate with @ on a new line. This is not very clear, as I've seen many descriptions that look like this:

"Looking at this halfling, you see is so cool, and so new. He has a cool dagger and an even cooler armor. You wish you could be cool like him! stop exit exit quit end q q save Newgal seems to be about 85 cm tall, 72 pound halfling female." Perhaps TEDII could clarify that to leave the editor and save work, enter @ on a new line.

  1. The newbie zone is superb for those who have not played MUDs before. It does a terrific job of explaining the ropes and helping them perform common tasks. Kudos!

Just so you know, that doesn't matter. Tempus itself knows what your prime stats are and they'll always be higher than your other stats. It does that automatically.

Are you serious? That's awesome. Good work!

Azimuth Posted 19 Jul 2005

Uh, thank the circlemud coders. It's been that way from day -1.

Infinity Posted 19 Jul 2005

Yea it has been like that from day one. That was a great feature. However lets get some imput on the other things that Merr mentioned. Maybe if we updated the tempus home page and when you log on the game it tell you to read about the races and classes to help you choose a race/class.

Could be some message like this:

Welcome to tempusmud. Please visit the homepage for information on getting started. www.tempusmud.com

Anyway after it is updated. We should almost have someone in charge of changing that all the time, hence all the changes.

A new character today, who was rather compotent and level 9 in just a short while (he had MUDded before) commented that it took him a long time to get connected because he did not understand whether or not his account name would be the name he would play by. Perhaps after a player selects "new" it could explain the account system, the account name, and that character name would be chosen in the next step.
