Penalties for Dying as Morts
Brywing Posted 5 Mar 2014

Hi Everyone,

I've been looking through a bunch of the major newbie threads and wanted to bring up the long discussed topic of dying for non-remort characters.

It seems like the current system inhibits exploration and and fun because people are too worried about dying.

I have two suggestions at the moment:

1) Mortals don't lose LPS or HP (Loss of LP and HP starts at gen 1) All their eq still drops into their body, tattoos are lost, implants need to be re-implanted if any, etc. but they don't get something they worked hard for taken away.

2) Retrieval is MUCH cheaper, especially for mortals and it scales with Generation, not level. Maybe something like 10,000g for mort, 25,000 (gen 1), 50,000 gen 2… with it going up 25,000g every gen from gen 1.

3) This one is optional but still I think worth a consider - Gold/Cash on your character stays on your character, perhaps minus a % for death. This allows newbies, who often don't store money in the bank a chance to retrieve.

This way there are still penalties in time, exp and gold, but they're scaled more towards being penalties for NEWBIES rather than new characters of existing remorts.

I think this would maintain death still being something to avoid, yet not as frustrating.

I think the mortal generation is when people decide to stay or not and this would be helpful.

I agree with all of your recent posts along these lines. Rather than adding a "me too" to each, I'll just do it here. So, I think reduced death penalties makes sense. There are still penalties (losing eq to looting mobs & dt's probably being the greatest threats). I also like the "daily exp bonus" and "2x exp area of the week" ideas.

As much as I like to explore, I do get caught up in leveling in my fave areas. Then I don't start branching out again until I get tired of those areas, or I level past them. Your suggestions would combine the desire to explore with the need to level, and I know I'd find that compelling.

This sounds fair. I think any change that would facilitate things for newbies (especially the first 20 or so levels) and keep them engaged will be very helpful.
